Boost for Oman’s commercial fishing as ministry launches two vessels

20 Dec 2020

To develop sultanate’s commercial fishing fleet, H E Dr Saud bin Hamoud bin Ahmed al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, inaugurated two vessels in Duqm port in the presence of a number of excellencies and officials.

The two fishing trawlers are called Sea Pride and Santiago.

The Santiago vessel belongs to Oman Fisheries Co. It is 65m long and 13.2m wide and has six  tanks to store fish with a storage capacity of 1,200 tonnes. Its crew consists of ten foreigners and four Omanis.

The Sea Pride is a commercial fishing vessel owned by Sea Pride Company. It is 38.65m long  and 12m wide and has a full capacity of 963 tonnes.

The ministry affirmed that the launch of the two vessels aims to develop the commercial fishing fleet and revitalise the fisheries industry by raising the added value of fish products and providing direct and indirect job opportunities for Omanis in fishing vessels, factories or the logistical sector that supports fishing operations.

The ministry said it is working to develop the commercial fishing sector by encouraging companies and youth to introduce advanced commercial fishing vessels with a variety of fishing equipment to target small pelagic fish stocks in deep waters.

In 2019, the ministry launched a programme to introduce 275 modern fishing vessels by 2023.

The programme aims to empower Omani youth to work in the fisheries sector. The programme also aims to maintain the quality of fish products, raise the revenues of Omani fishermen, improve their working conditions by meeting safety and security requirements on boats.
