APSR mulls updating regulatory framework for electricity meters

16 Dec 2020

The Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR) is reviewing an update of the existing regulatory framework for electricity meters.

The authority has been working with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion on the review and has now issued a ‘Public consultation on new standards and regulations for electricity metering systems’ in Oman.

The work includes reviewing and updating Oman Electrical Standard 22 (D, E & F), the Metering and Data Exchange Code (MDEC), the metering regulation and developing a new standard for pre-payment metering system.

The authority is currently inviting interested parties to review and provide their comments and observations on a number of points, including –

  1. A technical standard for metering systems. This standard will establish the technical requirements for metering equipment to be installed at all connections between networks of all licensed distribution companies and all network users.
  2.
  3. A technical standard for pre-payment meters which is the requirement for pre-payment metering equipment that may be installed at low voltage customer connections between networks of all licensed distribution companies and all network users.
  4.
  5. A technical regulation for installation and maintenance of metering systems.

The authority has invited responses to the consultation before January 7, 2021. All responses are to be directed to Director of Technical Regulation, Authority for Public Services Regulation, PO Box 954, PC 133 Al Khuwayr. Email: [email protected]
