A game-changing novel respirator mask

11 Apr 2020

A team at Makers Oman, in collaboration with The Royal Hospital, has converted a diving mask into a respirator mask for Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) patients.

Makers Oman is Innovation Park Muscat’s (IPM) newest and aspiring science and technology development entity. Ahmed bin AbdulRahman al Zadjali, operation and maintenance specialist at Makers Oman, said that the team used the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) techniques through 3D modelling to develop this mask.

“We worked on a diving mask to convert it into an advanced and easy-to-use respirator mask for the patients,”  Zadjali said. “Our team manufactured a three-dimensional piece which was added to the front of the mask to help oxygen  directly reach the patient’s mouth. The mask is light and easy to use.”

Zadjali said that it has been developed in cooperation with specialists from the health sector including doctors and consultants to ensure medical standards in the design and development process. Makers Oman is one of the national projects implemented in a strategic partnership between The Research Council, IPM, the Public Authority for Privatisation and Partnership (PAPP) and Bell.

Bell is committed to the PAPP through the ‘Oman  Offset Program’ and Makerspace People, a comprehensive turnkey solutions provider to execute the  project.
