477,445 tonnes of dates received from across Oman: MoCI

16 Feb 2020

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) has finished receiving dates from all governorates of the sultanate for the year 2019. The dates were received between November 3 and December 31, 2019.

Some of the date varieties received include Al Mabsali, Al Madlouki and Abu Naranja.

Ahmad bin Hamad al Harthy, head of the dates’ department in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, said, “The number of suppliers for dates for the 2019 season reached 144. The ministry received 477,445 tonnes of dates. The total purchasing price of these dates was RO144,845.263. This is in addition to the direct subsidy given to farmers who will directly export their dates. The subsidy was RO62.5 per tonne.”

Harthy said, “The work has been assigned to an Omani company for the production and packaging of dates. It would be handling, processing, marketing and selling the dates’ crop for the year 2019.

“These steps are beneficial for those working in date palm industries and would also help improve the quality of dates. Such steps also help boost the income of date cultivating farmers.”
