Muscat – More than 1,000 people took part in an Awareness Walk and Festival hosted by the Positive Vision Association at Al Khuwair Square on Thursday to mark World AIDS Day.

The gathering brought together residents, volunteers, organisations and youth groups with a shared aim of raising awareness on HIV, supporting people living with the virus and promoting accurate, stigma-free understanding through education and solidarity.

Organised in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Muscat Municipality, the event was held under the patronage of Ahmed bin Mohammed al Humaidi, Chairman of Muscat Municipality.

Participants walked through the square carrying messages that emphasised empathy, prevention and acceptance. Organisers stressed the significance of community engagement in addressing misconceptions and encouraging open discussion on HIV.

Nashia Yahya Nasib, President of Positive Vision Association, said the event extends beyond an annual observation. “It is a call to uphold dignity, inclusion and accurate awareness for every individual affected by HIV or substance-related challenges.”

Dina al Khalili, General Manager of Al Jisr Foundation, the main sponsor, said sustained awareness efforts remain essential. “Such awareness is needed everywhere. This problem is evident anywhere in the world, and Oman is no exception,” she said, highlighting the role of education in reducing stigma and encouraging early testing.

Members of Oman Elite Bikers also joined the event, adding visibility to the campaign. Al Harith Abdullah, representing the 13-member team, said they were pleased to take part. “We’re happy to support this event. Raising awareness, addressing stigma and talking openly about HIV is important for every community.”

The festival featured information booths, health screenings, performances and interactive activities aimed at fostering understanding and support. Organisers said the strong turnout reflected growing commitment across Oman to promote open dialogue and ensure people living with HIV feel included.

Positive Vision Association plans similar awareness initiatives throughout the year to enhance public knowledge and encourage a healthier, more informed society.
