9 Nov 2025 First robotic surgery By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Muscat – The Royal Hospital of Oman has successfully completed the Sultanate’s first-ever surgical procedure using a surgical robot.

The pioneering operation involved the restoration and correction of the kidney pelvis for a patient who was suffering from a narrowing of the section between the renal pelvis and the ureter. The procedure, which utilised cutting-edge robotic technology, was completed in approximately two hours.

The surgical team was led by Dr. Qais bin Mohammed al Hooti, Consultant Urologist at the Royal Hospital. Dr. Al Hooti highlighted that robotic surgery represents the pinnacle of precision, offering surgeons unprecedented control, three-dimensional visualisation, and the ability to execute delicate movements beyond the capability of the human hand. This technology significantly reduces incision size, blood loss, and complications, accelerating patient recovery time compared to conventional methods.

This significant achievement marks a major step forward in the adoption of advanced medical technology within Omani healthcare, promising less invasive and more precise treatment options for patients.
