Muscat – Omani photographer Ahmed al Hosni has won the first place at the inaugural Doha Photography Award 2025 in the Emotions category for his evocative image titled Escape.

The international competition drew 5,206 photographers from 101 countries, who submitted 27,663 images across six categories – Qatar, Colours, Black and White, Story, Emotions and Youth (Under 18).

Celebrated as one of the region’s leading platforms for visual storytelling, the award recognises artists who use their lenses to capture compelling human experiences.

Hosni received QR150,000 for his winning entry. Speaking to Muscat Daily, he said, “I am proud of this win. It means a lot to represent Oman on such a prestigious stage.”

He informed that Escape was taken in 2018 during a camel race in Bidiyah. “It was a chaotic moment – a camel veered off course as its owner struggled to regain control. Amid the dust and noise, a young girl found herself in its path, calling for help as panic spread,” he recalled.

The photographer said the image captures “a moment of fear, courage and humanity”, reflecting the emotional intensity behind one of Oman’s most traditional sports.

A member of Photographic Society of Oman, Hosni has participated in numerous competitions, earning several local and international accolades.

His passion for photography began in 2011 when he joined the society. Four years later, he founded the Sawarah Photography Group at the Children’s Welfare Centre in Al Khoudh, which trains children in photography on a voluntary basis.

“Our goal is to groom young photographers to represent Oman in international contests,” he said. “Our group won the World Cup of Photography in Germany in 2019.”

Hosni added that Oman’s rich landscapes and culture remain his greatest inspiration. “Our country has extraordinary natural beauty and cultural depth. I hope to continue capturing its spirit and sharing it with the world.”
