Suhar – A forum in Suhar on Monday focused on strengthening the role of Omani women in the tourism landscape, particularly in projects aligned with sustainability and innovation.

Organised by the North Batinah Governor’s Office, with participation of several government agencies and private stakeholders, the forum sought to empower women as active contributors to the tourism industry, enhance connections between female entrepreneurs and enablers, and support the development of policies that encourage women-led investments in the sector.

The event was held under the patronage of H E Dr Said bin Mohammed al Saqri, Minister of Economy.

Speaking during the forum, Dr Walid bin Mohammed al Jabri, Director of the Events and Awareness Department at North Batinah Municipality, noted that Omani women have demonstrated notable progress in delivering competitive and sustainable tourism projects. He stated that these ventures reflect global shifts towards environmentally and socially responsible practices while reinforcing the principles of innovation within the sector.

The programme featured five presentations on successful entrepreneurial experiences led by Omani women, in addition to a working paper that highlighted the Omani Women’s Academy and its role in supporting tourism startups. Two panel discussions were held, the first examining financing mechanisms and legislation required to boost sustainable women-led tourism initiatives, and the second exploring the media’s responsibility in promoting such projects.

An exhibition called Tourism Creativity was held on the sidelines of the forum, showcasing 20 SMEs, tour operators and experts. It included displays across diverse tourism fields, including archaeology, heritage, hotels, marine attractions, sports and adventure activities. Exhibitors also presented innovative uses of technology in enhancing women-run tourism enterprises.

According to organisers, the forum was part of ongoing efforts to create a more enabling ecosystem for women in the sector, reinforcing their contribution to Oman’s economic diversification agenda.
