Muscat – A student team from Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) has developed an automatic device that cleans solar panels without manual labour, aiming to improve the efficiency and lifespan of solar energy systems.

The project is among several initiatives incubated under SQU’s Scientific Incubator Programme, supported by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation. The programme promotes technology-driven solutions that contribute to sustainable energy and environmental goals.

Designed to operate autonomously, the device removes dust and debris that typically reduce solar panel performance. The system ensures consistent cleaning and maximised energy output while lowering operational costs and maintenance requirements.

According to the team, the device’s environmentally friendly design uses minimal water and energy, aligning with Oman’s efforts to expand clean energy adoption. Its automation allows panels to be maintained efficiently without human supervision, addressing challenges faced by large solar installations, especially in desert environments.

The team comprises Ammar al Busaidi, Omran al Haddabi, Saif al Shuhaimi, and Shareef Zidan. Their project was recognised among the top ten teams in the Royal Army of Oman’s Startup Competition in 2024.

The students said their innovation reflects the growing role of youth-led initiatives in advancing Oman’s renewable energy ambitions. With further testing and commercial development, the system could be deployed across solar farms in Oman and other regions seeking low-cost, sustainable maintenance solutions.
