Muscat – Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology has stepped up road maintenance operations in Al Wusta to ensure safe and smooth travel to Dhofar during the ongoing khareef season.

The Roads Department in Al Wusta began implementing a field plan in early June in coordination with maintenance contractors with the aim of enhancing road efficiency and addressing potential risks due to increased traffic and weather-related challenges.

Bakhit bin Salem al Awad, Director of Roads Department in Al Wusta, said 11 specialised machines have been deployed to remove sand and dust across key road networks. Technical teams and emergency equipment are in place to operate round the clock in response to breakdowns or road damage.

Priority upgrades were carried out on Sultan Said bin Taimur Road (265km), the Sinaw-Mahout-Al Jazir coastal road and the Al Ashkhara-Mahout-Al Jazir route. Maintenance of the 310m Suqra Pass in Al Jazir was completed ahead of the season, with safety measures put in place to accommodate increased traffic.

Awad added that maintenance works were also undertaken on the Al Juba-Haj road in Mahout, including shoulder expansion and repairs to damaged sections, aimed at improving overall infrastructure and reducing accident risks.
