Oman establishes society to tackle animal cruelty

25 May 2025 Oman establishes society to tackle animal cruelty By MOHAMMED TAHA

Muscat – The Ministry of Social Development (MoSD) has announced the formation of the Oman Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, aimed at improving animal welfare standards and tackling abuse across the sultanate.

Ministerial Decision No 171/2025, issued by Dr Laila bint Ahmed bin Awad al Najjar, establishes the society as a body dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of stray and injured animals. It will also work to raise awareness about animal rights and support legislation to prevent mistreatment.

The society’s activities will include education and training programmes in schools and among professionals involved in animal care. It also plans to organise events and campaigns to promote compassion towards animals and encourage community involvement.

The body will cooperate with both local and international organisations to advance its goals and promote global understanding of animal welfare needs.

A board of directors comprising five to twelve members will oversee the society. Members will serve two-year terms, with the possibility of renewal.

Funding will come from a combination of member subscriptions, donations, gifts and bequests, activity-related revenue, government support, and other ministry-approved sources.
