Sayyid Badr offers Omani toolkit for peace making at G20 meet

Muscat – Oman, represented by the Foreign Ministry, participated in a meeting of G20 foreign ministers held in the Indian capital New Delhi on Thursday.

Oman’s delegation to the meeting was headed by H E Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi, Foreign Minister. The meeting was held within the framework of India’s G20 presidency, which invited the sultanate as a guest of honour.

During the meeting, H E Sayyid Badr offered an Omani perspective on peace making – “toolkit for peace” – with its guiding principles, rooted in more than one thousand years of practical experience in water sharing, that reflect tolerance, dialogue, non-interference and good neighbourliness.

H E Sayyid Badr also spoke of the importance of giving voice to the concerns of the Global South, and expressed confidence that intensive multilateral engagement can address the polycrisis of supply chain disruptions, debt distress, geopolitics, as well as the challenge of climate change.

On Friday, H E Sayyid Badr took part in Raisina Dialogue 2023 – a multilateral conference committed to addressing the most challenging issues facing the global community – within the framework of Oman’s participation in G20 meetings in New Delhi.

H E Sayyid Badr spoke at a panel discussion – titled ‘A Region of Opportunities: From the Mediterranean to the Arabian Sea’ – that addressed the challenges and opportunities of the region with regard to energy dynamics, climate change, and regional and international cooperation.

In his speech, H E Sayyid Badr highlighted the geopolitical importance of the Middle East region. He also touched on the lucrative opportunities in the region and the world as a result of the transition process from an economy that relies on fossil energy sources to a modern economy that relies on renewable and clean energy.

These promising opportunities, the minister explained, can be utilised through constructive cooperation among various countries, organisations and research institutions.

H E Sayyid Badr underscored the importance of intensifying international efforts to tackle climate change related challenges to reduce carbon emissions, invest in renewable energy and green hydrogen, and encourage innovation to spur growth and stability.

He called on everyone to take advantage of the promising opportunities provided by the renewable energy sector and Oman’s willingness to cooperate in it. He also highlighted the facilities Oman offers to attract renewable energy related investments.

The dialogue was attended by H E Issa Saleh al Shibani, Ambassador of Oman to India, Pankaj Khimji, Advisor for Foreign Trade and International Cooperation at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion and Chief Coordinator for the participation of Oman in the G20 meetings, Khalid Hashil al Muselhi, Head of the Minister’s Office Department, and senior officials.
