Muscat – The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT), in cooperation with a Japanese mission from the Institute of Human Sciences in Kyoto, has documented an ancient city dating back 5,000 years in the wilayat of Nizwa in Dakliyah governorate.

A statement issued by the ministry said, ‘Excavations carried out at the Tanuf archaeological site in Nizwa resulted in finding archaeological evidence to prove the existence of a human settlement in a cave dating back to the Wadi Suq era.’

The mission also documented many archaeological sites dating back 5,000 years adjacent to the cave, in addition to the Bronze Age towers and tower tombs dating back to the Hafeet era.

The ministry has been working with the Japanese mission for more than 12 years, during which extensive surveys and documentation of many archaeological sites were conducted.

In December last year, the ministry, in cooperation with a Polish mission from the University of Warsaw, discovered an ancient city dating back to the 1st millennium BC in Dhahirah.

The ministry said that the excavations carried out at the Ain Bani Sa’ida archaeological site, now in the sixth season, resulted in the discovery of remnants of an ancient city, which dates back to the 1st millennium BC of the Iron Age.
