11 Oct 2026 First Impella-assisted cardiac procedure in Oman By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Muscat – The National Heart Centre at The Royal Hospital has successfully performed its first cardiac catheterisation procedure using the advanced Impella CP heart pump system, marking a milestone in the treatment of patients with complex heart conditions in Oman.

The procedure was carried out by an Omani medical team, supported by nursing and technical staff, demonstrating the hospital’s capacity to undertake complex, high-precision cardiac interventions.

The Impella CP is a temporary heart pump inserted through a catheter to support the heart’s pumping function and maintain blood flow to vital organs. The technology can provide circulatory support for patients undergoing high-risk cardiac procedures or experiencing cardiogenic shock.

Dr Adel Al Jabri, Head of the Cardiac Catheterisation Department at the National Heart Centre, said the introduction of the technology represents a significant advancement in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, particularly for patients requiring high-risk percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or treatment for cardiogenic shock.

The achievement reflects ongoing efforts by Royal Hospital and the Ministry of Health to introduce advanced medical technologies and strengthen specialised healthcare services in Oman.

It also highlights the role of Omani medical professionals in delivering complex interventions in line with international standards of healthcare quality and patient safety.
