Muscat – On August 14, as the Pakistani diaspora across Oman gathers to celebrate the 80th Independence Day of Pakistan, stories of cultural pride, diplomatic friendship and community excellence take centre stage. While annual celebrations traditionally spotlight seasoned professionals and diplomats, a dynamic younger generation is rewriting what it means to represent their heritage on the global stage.

Enter Aysal Waheed. At just 16 years old, the Muscat-based high school student has shattered traditional boundaries. She is not merely a teenager with diverse hobbies; she is an internationally published author, a history-making national-level ice hockey player, a seasoned TEDx speaker and a trailblazing equestrian athlete. The only Pakistani female show jumper actively training and competing in Oman, Aysal stands as a beacon of Pakistani excellence in the sultanate.

Breaking barriers

Aysal’s relationship with the equestrian arena began at the age of eight, developing her skills within Oman’s competitive, high-standard international training environment. Navigating the demanding world of show jumping independently came with unique challenges, but it provided her with invaluable international exposure.

Today, she is proudly registered as an international athlete with the Equestrian Federation of Pakistan and actively battles for podium space in the sultanate’s highly competitive national circuit. Her steady rise through the Oman Equestrian and Racing Federation national circuit has established her as a regular, respected presence on the field. This athletic journey is anchored by consecutive achievements and honours. Her achievements did not go unnoticed by community leaders, even as the Pakistan Embassy in Oman formally recognised her efforts, awarding her a Certificate of Commendation.

“Competing independently in an international environment teaches you a different level of resilience,” Aysal shares. “Every time I enter the arena, I am carrying the green and white flag. I want to show the world that Pakistani riders can excel on the global stage. But none of this would be possible without the beautiful Sultanate of Oman, which has given me an incredible platform, facilities, and opportunities to grow and shine. I owe a massive debt of gratitude to my visionary Omani coaches and teachers who mentored me, and above all, to my parents, whose unconditional support and sacrifices have been the backbone of my success.”

From ice rink to literary stage

What makes Aysal’s story distinctly compelling is that her athletic discipline does not stop at the stables. On ice, she plays for Oman’s women’s national ice hockey team. Her participation in regional tournaments – including the Bahrain Ice Hockey Rally and the Union Women’s Ice Hockey Tournament in Al Ain – contributed to a historic milestone that placed her among Guinness World Record holders.

When she isn’t clearing physical hurdles, she is dominating the literary landscape. Aysal is the author of nine books available on Amazon. Her high-fantasy novel – The Balhaerian Prince – and socially conscious book – Alejandra Plays Soccer: A Story About Women Empowerment – made a mark at both Muscat International Book Fair and Sharjah International Book Fair.

A voice for the future

Standing on the global red circle at age 13, Aysal delivered her debut TEDx talk – Dream, Believe, Achieve – at TEDx KIET Pakistan. Her message remains an ongoing blueprint for her lifestyle: training jumps before sunrise, writing complex high-fantasy draft chapters before homework and skating out onto international ice rinks.

Her multi-talented brilliance has earned her the Asia Arab Excellence Award for Young Achievers, proving that youthful ambition knows no geographical or cultural bounds.

As Pakistan celebrates its independence milestone, Aysal’s journey serves as a powerful reminder of the vibrant, unstoppable potential residing within the youth of the Pakistani diaspora. She represents a new era of cross-border pride – proving to both Oman and Pakistan that you never have to settle for just one dream.
