Muscat – Oman has adopted updated GCC technical regulations for digital radio receivers, introducing new standards aimed at improving product quality, supporting advances in digital broadcasting technology and strengthening consumer protection.

The new regulation, GSO 2693:2026, was announced jointly by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, the Ministry of Defence and the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA). It sets technical requirements for terrestrial digital audio broadcasting (T-DAB+) receivers, as well as FM and AM radio receivers.

Officials said the revised regulation has been introduced to keep pace with rapid developments in digital radio broadcasting technologies, enhance the performance and quality of radio receivers, and ensure that products available in the market meet recognised technical standards.

The regulation applies to manufacturers, producers, importers and retailers of radio receivers, as well as smart products equipped with radio reception capability.

It covers a broad range of devices, including home and portable radio receivers, vehicle-integrated radio systems, aftermarket radio receivers and multifunction smart devices with built-in radio reception features.

The updated standards are expected to improve the reliability and performance of digital radio equipment while supporting the adoption of modern broadcasting technologies across the Sultanate and the wider GCC.

Authorities said the regulation also aims to strengthen market oversight by ensuring that imported and locally marketed products comply with unified Gulf technical specifications. The move is expected to provide consumers with higher-quality products while facilitating trade through harmonised standards across GCC member states.

The adoption of the updated regulation reflects Oman’s continued efforts to modernise its telecommunications and broadcasting ecosystem, align with regional technical standards and encourage the availability of advanced digital technologies in the local market.
