Muscat – Environment Authority (EA) has launched a large-scale campaign to plant 4mn indigenous tree seeds across the mountains of Dhofar governorate as part of ongoing efforts to restore vegetation cover, combat desertification, enhance biodiversity and rehabilitate natural ecosystems.

Running from July 20 to July 30, the campaign is being carried out in cooperation with DhofarMunicipality and the Awareness Initiative Team, with the active participation of local communities. It will cover the wilayats of Mirbat, Taqah, Salalah, Rakhyut and Dalkhut.

The initiative is being implemented for the fifth consecutive year, according to Hatem bin Salim Al Mahri, Director of the Vegetation Development Department at the Environment Authority directorate in Dhofar.

Al Mahri said the khareef season provides ideal conditions for seed dispersal and germination due to its dense fog, high humidity and regular rainfall, significantly improving the chances of successful seed establishment during the early stages of growth.

He explained that the seasonal moisture enables seedlings to develop strong root systems, helping them withstand future dry periods. The trees also play an important role in stabilising soil, reducing erosion, maintaining soil fertility and supporting the long-term sustainability of Dhofar’s vegetation.

The campaign focuses on planting a range of native tree species, including sidr, shagoot, kalit, warwar, wild cactus and wild fig, to restore natural habitats, increase plant diversity and provide food sources and shelter for wildlife.

Al Mahri said the participation of government institutions, volunteers and local communities highlights the importance of community partnership in protecting the environment, conserving natural resources and supporting Oman’s broader environmental sustainability goals.
