EA confirms natural algae bloom in Dhofar

Muscat – Environment Authority (EA) has confirmed that recent changes in water colour and the emergence of odours along various beaches in the Dhofar Governorate are the result of a natural seasonal phenomenon.

Following reports of these changes, the Authority conducted laboratory examinations on seawater samples on July 3, which conclusively revealed that there is no oil pollution present. The observed changes are attributed to the seasonal rise of algae to the water’s surface caused by wave action during the Khareef season, creating the annual green tide effect typical of the region.

The Authority further clarified that this natural occurrence is entirely unrelated to the recent vessel grounding incident near the Hallaniyat Islands. Officials urge the public to rely exclusively on official sources for accurate information and to avoid spreading unverified rumours.
