Muscat – The National Employment Programme has launched a project to introduce professional certification pathways across vocational colleges, a move aimed at strengthening the link between education outcomes and labour market requirements while enhancing the employability of Omani graduates.
The initiative was unveiled on Sunday during a meeting attended by representatives from the Directorate General of Vocational Colleges at the Ministry of Labour, officials from the Vocational College in Saham and the company responsible for implementing the project.
The project seeks to equip students with internationally recognised professional certifications and specialised skills required by current and emerging industries, helping national talent meet the demands of a rapidly evolving job market.
The first phase will be implemented at the Vocational College in Saham, making it the first institution in Oman to adopt the professional certification pathway model. Authorities plan to use the results of the pilot programme to support its expansion across vocational colleges nationwide.
Officials said the initiative is expected to improve the efficiency of the vocational education and training system and strengthen its ability to respond to labour market needs.
The meeting reviewed the project’s objectives, implementation framework and timeline, as well as the expected outcomes of the initial phase. These include identifying priority professional certifications, analysing accreditation requirements, assessing institutional readiness and developing implementation roadmaps for the proposed certification pathways.
Participants also discussed coordination mechanisms among partner organisations to ensure effective implementation and the long-term sustainability of the project. The initiative is intended to create an institutional model that can be replicated across vocational colleges throughout the sultanate.
Officials stressed that professional certification pathways would provide students with recognised career development routes linked directly to academic specialisations and employment opportunities. They said the approach would enhance the value of vocational qualifications, improve graduate competitiveness and increase access to quality jobs.
The project forms part of national efforts to strengthen workforce development and employment opportunities for Omanis. By enabling students to acquire advanced professional skills and industry-recognised credentials, the initiative is expected to improve workforce readiness and support the country’s growing demand for skilled talent in promising economic sectors.
