Muscat – Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) has issued a critical warning to the public regarding the circulation of an unbranded magnetic pen toy manufactured in China. This alert follows notifications received through the Gulf Aajel rapid alert system, which identified the product as a significant danger to the health and safety of users, particularly young children. The primary concern involves the small magnetic components of the pen, which pose a life-threatening risk if swallowed.
Medical evidence highlighted by the Authority indicates that if a child swallows more than one strong magnet within a short timeframe, the pieces can attract one another through the intestinal walls. This internal attraction can lead to severe complications, including intestinal blockages, perforations, or twisting, all of which present a direct threat to a child’s life. Despite extensive field inspections and search operations conducted by enforcement officers, no authorised local distributor for this specific toy was found within the Sultanate of Oman.
It is believed that these hazardous items may have entered the Omani market through unofficial channels, such as individual imports from neighbouring countries or various online shopping platforms. Consequently, the Authority has called upon parents and consumers to immediately avoid purchasing or using this type of magnetic pen. Furthermore, the public is encouraged to ensure all children’s toys meet approved safety standards and to maintain close supervision during play. Consumers should regularly check the Authority’s official website and the Gulf Standardization Organization’s Aajel platform for the latest safety updates regarding unsafe products.
