Photographer and adventurer Shihab bin Hamad Al Shandoudi, a passionate amateur photographer and weather enthusiast captivates nature lovers with striking images that document Oman’s diverse and breathtaking landscapes.

Widely recognised for his work, Al Shandoudi has received numerous awards and honours both within Oman and internationally, reflecting the growing appreciation for his ability to capture rare and compelling natural scenes.

Known for travelling long distances in search of unique moments, Al Shandoudi moves across deserts, mountains, plains and valleys with his camera always at hand, capturing scenes that reflect nature’s harmony – from dramatic cloud formations and rainfall to flowing wadis and tranquil desert vistas.

In one of his recent expeditions following rains that swept parts of the sultanate, Al Shandoudi embarked on a nearly day-long journey covering around 115km from the Wilayat of Ibri to reach the Al Safa area in Al Dhahirah Governorate, on the edge of the vast Rub’ al Khali desert.

The challenging desert trek took him across dunes and rugged terrain before he arrived at what he describes as “one of nature’s most captivating spectacles.”

Recent rainfall had transformed the desert landscape, where streams flowing through valleys and ravines formed shimmering pools nestled between towering sand dunes. The striking contrast between deep blue water and golden sands created a rare and mesmerising natural panorama.

Through his lens, Al Shandoudi documented these scenes, presenting images that reveal an extraordinary side of Oman’s desert environment – where water and sand meet in a tranquil yet dramatic landscape.

“The scene is truly breathtaking,” he said. “The water flowing from the wadis gathers between the dunes to form natural lakes, creating a unique painting of untouched nature.”

Situated on the fringes of the Empty Quarter, the area offers a remarkable visual contrast as calm waters blend with vast expanses of sand, producing landscapes that evoke both wonder and reflection.

Such locations are increasingly attracting photography enthusiasts, explorers and nature lovers, particularly during the rainy season when the desert briefly transforms into a vibrant natural gallery.

Despite the beauty, reaching the site remains a challenge. Al Shandoudi noted that the journey requires determination and careful preparation.

“The road is very rough and can only be accessed using four-wheel-drive vehicles,” he said, adding that desert exploration demands both experience and planning.

This is not the first time he has documented such rare phenomena. He previously captured seasonal desert lakes in Al Juba area of Al Wusta Governorate, another remote region known for its dramatic post-rain landscapes.

For Al Shandoudi, photography is more than a hobby – it is a lifelong passion that began in childhood and evolved into a mission to showcase Oman’s natural beauty to the world.

“I have loved photography since I was young,” he said. “I enjoy travelling from place to place to capture the beauty of nature and share it with people.” He believes photography goes beyond simply taking pictures.

“Photography is not just about capturing an image. It is about expressing an idea and telling a story. Through my work, I hope to highlight and promote the beauty of Oman globally.”

Through journeys like these – and a growing list of accolades at home and abroad – Al Shandoudi continues to reveal hidden landscapes and rare natural moments, reminding audiences that Oman’s deserts still hold many surprises waiting to be discovered.
