Muscat – Oman has underscored the importance of strengthening multilateral cooperation and supporting the role of Unesco in protecting education and preserving cultural heritage.

Speaking at the opening of the general session of the 224th Executive Board of Unesco in Paris, France, Amna bint Salim Al Balooshi, Oman’s Permanent Delegate to Unesco, highlighted the growing challenges facing the Arab region amid ongoing conflicts and attacks targeting infrastructure as well as educational and cultural institutions.

She pointed in particular to the situation in Palestine and Lebanon, where such events have disrupted the educational process and affected thousands of students. She stressed the need for a more coordinated and effective international response to ensure the continuity of education during times of crisis.

Amna reaffirmed Oman’s firm position advocating peaceful solutions, de-escalation and a return to dialogue and diplomacy as the path towards reinforcing security and stability and upholding international law.

She noted that education represents a top national priority for the sultanate and remains a central pillar in achieving the goals of Vision 2040. In this context, she highlighted Oman’s contribution to global discussions on the future of education and its active engagement in leadership frameworks within Unesco.

Amna also emphasised the vital role played by Unesco in protecting cultural heritage and safeguarding cultural diversity, particularly in conflict zones. She welcomed the ‘Unesco 80’ initiative aimed at enhancing the organisation’s efficiency and strengthening its governance.

Concluding her remarks, she reiterated Oman’s commitment to supporting Unesco’s mission, stressing that building peace in the minds of people, advancing knowledge and safeguarding culture form the foundation of a safer and more sustainable world.
