Muscat – Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR) held a comprehensive media briefing in Muscat on Tuesday to present its latest achievements and operational performance indicators. During the session, officials detailed an integrated regulatory framework designed to ensure clear role differentiation between policymakers, regulators, and service operators. This systematic approach aims to significantly enhance performance efficiency and strengthen the principles of governance across essential national sectors, fostering a stable environment for sustainable utility management.
Substantial growth was reported within the water and wastewater sector for the period between 2021 and 2025, with water consumption increasing by 13% and the number of subscribers rising by 12%. Similarly, the electricity sector experienced a 14% increase in subscribers and a 27% surge in consumption, trends that directly reflect the ongoing economic and urban expansion within the Sultanate. These figures underscore the rising demand for infrastructure to support a growing population and a diversifying economy.
A significant milestone was also highlighted regarding the transition to sustainable power sources, as renewable energy production reached 9.46% of total output by the end of 2025. This marks a substantial increase from the 1.95% recorded in 2021, with current production capacity now sufficient to cover the consumption requirements of approximately 155,000 homes. The presentation concluded by outlining future strategic plans to align operational outputs with international best practices in public service regulation.
