Muscat- Three Omani citizens have been arrested for illegally hunting three Arabian gazelles, a protected wildlife species, in Dhofar Governorate, the Environment Authority said.

The arrests were carried out by the Environment Authority in coordination with the Royal Oman Police following the discovery of the illegally hunted animals. The authority said the necessary legal procedures have been initiated against those involved in accordance with Oman’s environmental laws and regulations.

Arabian gazelles are among the country’s protected wildlife, and hunting, capturing or harming protected species is prohibited under Omani law. The latest case highlights continuing efforts by authorities to curb illegal hunting and protect the Sultanate of Oman’s rich biodiversity.

The Environment Authority stressed the importance of safeguarding wildlife and maintaining ecological balance, urging members of the public to comply with environmental legislation and avoid activities that threaten protected species.

Illegal hunting remains a concern in areas that provide habitats for Oman’s wildlife, particularly during periods when animals are vulnerable to human activity. Authorities have stepped up monitoring and enforcement measures to protect endangered and protected species and preserve natural habitats.

The authority also called on the public to cooperate with environmental authorities and report activities that could endanger wildlife or damage natural ecosystems.

Officials said legal action would be taken against those found violating environmental regulations.

The Environment Authority urged citizens and residents to treat Oman’s wildlife as a national environmental asset and to support conservation efforts by respecting hunting restrictions and protecting animals in their natural habitats.

The case comes as Oman continues to strengthen measures aimed at preserving biodiversity and ensuring the sustainable protection of its wildlife for future generations.
