Muscat – Insurance companies recorded around 21,700 traffic accidents during the second quarter of 2026, an increase of 14.8% compared to approximately 18,900 accidents during the same period in 2025, according to unaudited official data issued by the Financial Services Authority.

Minor accidents accounted for the largest share, with 15,850 cases, representing about 73% of the total, while 5,893 were major accidents, accounting for nearly 27%.

The data showed that the total number of traffic accident claims reached around 22,000 in Q2 2026, up 7.2% compared to the corresponding period last year.

Number of claims related to minor accidents increased about 12.5%, reaching 15,800, compared to 14,000 in Q2 2025.

Meanwhile, claims arising from major accidents involving property damage decreased 11.9%, from 3,300 to approximately 2,900.

Claims related to major accidents involving injuries and medical treatment expenses rose about 4%, from 3,100 to 3,200. Fatality-related claims, however, fell slightly from 83 to 80.

The total value of compensation paid reached approximately RO25.1mn during the quarter, representing a 19% increase compared to Q2 2025.

Of this, around RO12.48mn was related to minor accidents, while major accidents involving property damage accounted for RO5.3mn. Claims involving injuries and medical treatment expenses stood at RO6.2mn, while claims related to fatalities amounted to around RO1mn.

The indicators underscore the importance of continued efforts to enhance road safety, promote responsible driving and strengthen compliance with traffic regulations to reduce the human and financial impact of road accidents.
