Muscat – The Exceptional Extraits collection from the Omani High Perfumery House of Amouage provides opportunities to present a familiar story from a different angle, or in a manner that is more profound or expansive. All the compositions in the range remain true to their original perfumes, but they cast the ideas within them in an unexpected light. Now, two perfumes join the Exceptional Extraits collection – Decision 42 and Overture 41 – both of which raise the drama at the core of their originals to even more heart-stopping levels.

“Although they’re quite different from each other,” says Renaud Salmon, Amouage’s Chief Creative Officer, “the original eaux de parfum of both Decision and Overture Woman share a very particular charge – a sense of emotions being played out at their extremes. Overture Woman concerns a debutante singer who suddenly and unexpectedly has to replace the Grand Diva and take to the stage, while Decision is about a living tree taken to the brink of death by a bolt of lightning. I thought it would be fascinating to explore whether these heightened sentiments could be extended even further, to an emotional altitude that would make them worthy candidates for our Exceptional Extraits.”

Decision 42 – a question made more pressing

“The original Decision eau de parfum had a very clear focus,” says Salmon. “It presented the story of a juniper tree struck by lightning, and then asked a seemingly simple question: would the tree survive the attack or would it perish?”

For this new piece of work, Salmon and perfumer Quentin Bisch have injected the crisis at the heart of the composition with a greater sense of urgency. Now, the lightning strike is even more intense, increasing the existential immediacy of the response, while lending the tree’s ultimate determination to live more gravity.

In Decision 42, the lightning element of the composition has been sharpened by the freshness of Neroli and Cardamom, as well as the diffusiveness of Cinnamon. The Juniper representing the tree has been combined with Javanol, Patchouli and Rectified Pine Tar to make it darker and more far-reaching – a stark contrast with the whiteness of the lightning. Finally, the base has been rendered warmly life-affirming with the addition of Vanilla and Labdanum – unctuous materials that never fail to project a sense of enduring humanity. These grandiose elements combine to make the perfume’s life-or-death exploration especially piercing and insightful. Uncompromising, fierce and dazzling, Decision 42 cuts to the heart of the most vital of questions.

Overture 41 – from understudy to legend

“Overture Woman is already dramatic,” says Salmon. “A truly scene-stealing piece of work. So making it loftier was always going to pose a singular challenge.”

In her original eau de parfum, Annick Menardo presents a young understudy who is informed that, as the Grand Diva is unwell, she will have to step into the central role. Despite her inexperience and nervousness, the debutante’s innate talent and instinctive understanding of her responsibility towards her audience enable her to deliver a truly stellar performance. For this new piece of work, Salmon and Menardo have raised her to the status of a legend.

In Overture 41, Annick Menardo takes her creation to grand heights. Firstly, she expands the familiar Saffron, Calvados and Rose to unprecedented dimensions, balancing their richness in a way that ensures they maintain harmony at all times. In the base, an intensified Patchouli and Leather magnify the performer’s nascent assertiveness. The inclusion of a sweet, resinous Amber accord – not present in the eau de parfum – grounds all these excesses and prevents them from losing contact with earthly physicality. Meanwhile, the use of an innovative ingredient called Sandalwood Dreches Absolute – obtained from upcycled sandalwood chips – acts as an anchor to the more tempestuous elements, and imbues the whole with an air of gravitas and authority. In Overture 41, the ingenue is now a diva, telling her tale with a passion and vibrancy that ensure her impact will resonate through the ages.

The diva decides – bringing the two stories together

Although Overture Woman and Decision have never been presented as a pair in the Amouage collection – the former was released in 2020, five years before the latter – the very fact that Salmon was working on their Exceptional Extraits at the same time prompted him to make connections between them.

“I hadn’t considered the links between the two scents before shaping their Exceptional Extrait versions,” he says, “but I now see how they complement each other. The singer in Overture 41 could be symbolised by the tree in Decision 42. The lights that dazzle the debutante as the curtain rises are very much like the lightning that strikes the tree. Both the singer and the tree have enjoyed a long, rich life, and are now at a crossroads – they have to choose which path they intend to take next. Will they concede that their time is done, or will they decide to elevate their lives into the realms of the undying? For me, the answer is clear: the determination of the diva reinforces the stoicism of the tree, and vice versa.” Through the alchemy of perfumery, the sentiments of Overture 41 and Decision 42 meld into each other, offering rich rewards to those willing to listen to the tale they have to tell.

The Exceptional Extraits – the preciousness of precision

Amouage’s Exceptional Extraits are some of the most precious creations offered by the House. Each of the scents in this exclusive collection is the result of countless careful experiments to measure and evaluate the effects of different ageing times and concentration levels. The aim is to push the ingredients – as well as the perfumers’ skills – to the absolute edges of what they can contribute to the final composition. In the case of Decision 42, a concentration of 42% perfume oils and an ageing time of 6 weeks were chosen as the best levels to convey the intention behind this piece of work, whereas for Overture 41 the optimal figures were the same ageing time – 6 weeks – and a concentration of 41%. It is only through this precise calibration that the visions of Salmon, Bisch and Menardo could be brought to vivid, unforgettable life.

Packaging & presentation

As is the case with all the other Exceptional Extraits, the bottles for Decision 42 and Overture 41 are a more dramatic version of the iconic Amouage flacon. They both feature gleaming inner lacquering: Decision 42 is in a shade of seagull grey to echo the colour of Decision eau de parfum, while Overture 41 is finished in a rich amber hue, in keeping with the tone of Overture Woman eau de parfum. The exterior of the packaging displays the evocative work of Belgian artist Louise Mertens. A shimmer of gold dust adds a final touch of irresistibly theatrical elegance.

For Overture 41 campaign stills, inspiration was drawn from the organza fabrics of the opera world, translating their lightness, movement and fluidity into sculptural forms. Real silk was shaped and suspended in motion, while transparency, rich tones and delicate touches of gold leaf evoke a fleeting moment of movement and dance.

Juniper wood took centre stage in the creative set for Decision 42 campaign stills, with real branches evoking the tree struck by lightning at the heart of its story. Scorched and fractured wood, traced with veins of gold, captures a moment of rupture and transformation, while the aroma released as the juniper burns brings a sensory dimension to the creative process. Both campaigns were directed by Louise Mertens. 

Moreover, the creative direction for the Exceptional Extraits video campaign explores each fragrance through liquid, movement and colour. The campaign was created by Thomas Vanz, a specialist in liquid and macro cinematography and a long-standing contributor to the Amouage Creative Collective – in collaboration with Wildvertising.
