USA – US President Donald Trump shifted from issuing severe threats to ultimately cancelling scheduled military attacks on Iran following a series of volatile escalations across the Middle East.

The sequence of events began on July 8 when the United States resumed attacks on Iran after Tehran targeted ships navigating an unauthorised route through the Strait of Hormuz, prompting President Trump to declare the previous ceasefire over.

In retaliation, Iran targeted assets it identified as belonging to the United States in Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, and Qatar, alongside vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, which resulted in the deaths of four US soldiers in Jordan and Iraq. The conflict widened further on July 20 when Yemen’s Houthis announced a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia in the Red Sea.

Tensions fluctuated as diplomatic and military manoeuvres unfolded throughout late July and early August. Following thirteen consecutive nights of airstrikes, the United States paused its bombing campaign on July 25, with President Trump noting that Washington and Tehran were engaged in productive discussions.

Shortly after meeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on July 28, Trump adopted a harsher stance on July 31, threatening to continue striking Iran severely until pressure became unbearable.

In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned on August 1 that Tehran would deliver a decisive and proportionate response to any joint aggression from the United States or Israel, following diplomatic consultations with officials from Pakistan, Turkiye, and Saudi Arabia.

Ultimately, on August 2, President Trump called off the threatened military strikes after stating that Iran and other regional partners requested a pause because the core parameters of a potential agreement had been successfully negotiated.
