Nizwa – An Omani farmer in the wilayat of Nizwa has successfully transformed four acres of land into a successful papaya farm, cultivating around 9,000 trees and producing up to three tonnes of fresh fruit every week.

Faisal bin Ali Al Bahri’s project is centred on the Taiwanese hybrid papaya variety, Red Lady, which is renowned for its rapid fruiting, high productivity and superior fruit quality. The venture highlights the potential of modern farming practices to enhance food security and support sustainable agricultural development in Oman.

The farm uses intensive cultivation techniques and a modern agricultural system designed to maximise land utilisation and improve production efficiency. The farm’s weekly output of two to three tonnes ensures a steady supply of fresh papayas to local markets throughout the year.

The produce is marketed in the wilayats of Nizwa, Bahla and Al Hamra and supplied to central markets, strengthening the presence of locally grown fruits across the sultanate.

According to Al Bahri, the project’s high productivity despite its relatively small area demonstrates the economic viability of intensive farming. He also sees promising opportunities for developing value-added industries based on papaya, including juices, jams and natural care products.

The farm relies on a modern drip irrigation system and water-based fertiliser injection techniques to ensure efficient water management and maintain crop quality. Regular pruning, balanced fertilisation and fruit thinning are also carried out to achieve optimal yields.

Despite challenges such as pests and heat stress, the farm has maintained stable production through early monitoring, integrated pest management programmes and carefully scheduled irrigation during cooler periods.

Al Bahri said the project has benefited from technical guidance and advisory support from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources through regular field visits by agricultural engineers.

Looking ahead, he plans to expand the cultivated area and diversify into other fruit crops, while encouraging young Omanis to invest in agriculture as a sector capable of generating sustainable incomes and contributing to the nation’s food security goals.
