Salalah – The Environment Authority (EA) in Dhofar on Wednesday launched the ‘Environmental Guardians’ initiative to strengthen environmental protection and preserve the governorate’s natural resources during the khareef season, which attracts thousands of visitors annually.

The initiative, which will run for two months, seeks to enhance field monitoring at tourist destinations, natural sites and green spaces across areas affected by the khareef season.

Adnan bin Ahmed Ghawas, Head of the Environmental Monitoring and Emergency Department at EA in Dhofar and supervisor of the initiative, said the programme aims to reduce negative practices that could harm the environment, vegetation and wildlife, while raising public compliance with environmental regulations and requirements.

He said field teams will carry out monitoring, inspections and awareness activities, in addition to responding to reports and addressing environmental violations. They will also guide visitors on the importance of maintaining the cleanliness of natural sites and protecting vegetation to promote environmental sustainability and preserve Dhofar’s unique natural heritage.

Ghawas stressed that the initiative reflects EA’s efforts to strike a balance between supporting tourism during the khareef season and safeguarding natural resources. He noted that the programme will be implemented in coordination with relevant government entities to ensure a safe and sustainable environment for both visitors and residents of the governorate.
