Shinas – The Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) has seized large quantities of smokeless chewing tobacco, cigarettes and alcoholic beverages during a raid on an illegal distribution site in Shinas, as part of its ongoing efforts to safeguard public health and combat the trade in prohibited products.

The operation was carried out by the Directorate General of Consumer Protection in North Batinah, represented by the Consumer Protection Office in Shinas, following reports that expatriate workers were using a residential apartment to sell and distribute banned products in violation of Omani laws and regulations.

After completing the necessary legal procedures and coordinating with the relevant authorities, inspection teams raided the premises and confiscated 2,399 packets and containers of smokeless chewing tobacco, 1,110 packs of assorted cigarettes and 14 containers of alcoholic beverages. Authorities also seized materials and equipment used in the preparation and packaging of the prohibited products.

The CPA said all confiscated items have been seized and legal proceedings initiated against those involved.

The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying inspection campaigns across all governorates of the Sultanate to curb illegal trade and practices that threaten consumer health and safety. It also called on members of the public to report suspicious products and unlawful activities, stressing that community cooperation plays a vital role in creating a safer marketplace.

The crackdown forms part of broader efforts to enhance consumer protection, improve market efficiency and support the objectives of Oman Vision 2040 in promoting quality of life and ensuring a safe and sustainable consumer environment.
