Muscat – The Majlis A’Shura will convene three consecutive sessions this week to discuss the statement of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) and review several committee reports on national proposals.

Ahmed Mohammed al Nadabi, Secretary-General of the Majlis A’Shura, said the council will dedicate its 14th and 15th regular sessions of the third annual sitting (2025–2026) on Wednesday and Thursday to debating the ministry’s statement.

H E Eng Saeed Hamoud al Maawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, will present the statement and respond to members’ queries on sectors under the ministry’s mandate.

According to Nadabi, the statement will focus on three main pillars reviewing the ministry’s performance and its efforts in developing transport, communications, information technology, logistics and artificial intelligence.

Members will assess performance under the Tenth Five-Year Development Plan (2021–2025), including project evaluation mechanisms, performance indicators, implementation follow-up and challenges affecting execution. The statement will also outline strategic programmes in the Eleventh Five-Year Development Plan (2026–2030), particularly those aimed at supporting economic growth and job creation.

Upcoming projects under the new plan will be reviewed, including criteria for prioritising national projects, approved strategic programmes and the contribution of the ministry’s sectors to gross domestic product.

Sector-specific discussions will cover land transport policies, including expansion of road networks between governorates, completion of dual carriageways, road safety standards, renewable energy solutions for road lighting and improvements in public transport services.

In the maritime sector, the statement will address agreements linking Omani ports with global counterparts, port infrastructure development, strategic maritime investments and initiatives supporting marine tourism.

The communications and information technology sector review will examine localisation of technology industries, enhancement of local content, support for research and innovation, restructuring of the telecommunications market and attraction of global technology firms. Plans to develop national talent, advance digital transformation and explore initiatives such as a national digital currency will also be highlighted.

Developments in space and artificial intelligence, including governance frameworks, expansion of AI applications, national capability-building and smart government transformation, will be discussed. The role of the postal sector in supporting e-commerce will also be reviewed.

The logistics sector discussion will focus on strengthening integration within the ecosystem, attracting strategic investments and reinforcing Oman’s position as a regional logistics hub.

Separately, the 13th regular session on Tuesday will review five committee reports on proposals, including transforming certain areas in Quriyat into tourism zones, establishing a national financing guarantee centre for SMEs, attracting low-cost international airlines to Suhar Airport, setting up a centre for family studies and Omani women’s affairs, and exempting beneficiaries of the family income support scheme from electricity and water bills.
