Dhofar – The Municipal Council of Dhofar on Tuesday reviewed a proposal to establish an integrated truck services station in the governorate, as part of efforts to enhance logistics infrastructure and regulate the movement of heavy vehicles.

The proposal was discussed during the council’s meeting chaired by H H Sayyid Marwan bin Turki Al Said, Governor of Dhofar and Chairman of the Municipal Council. Members examined a number of service and development issues aimed at supporting urban growth and improving public facilities across the governorate.

During the meeting, Dhofar Municipality official delivered a visual presentation on park and recreational projects being implemented across the governorate. The projects are distributed among various wilayats in line with urban expansion and are designed to meet the needs of residents and visitors.

The presentation also highlighted the proposal to establish and operate a comprehensive truck services station that would provide an integrated service environment for the land transport and freight sector. The project is expected to improve operational efficiency, support logistics activities and better organise truck traffic in the governorate.

As part of Oman’s commitment to environmental sustainability and its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, the council also hosted specialists from the Gulf Green Recycling Centre. The facility, located in Salalah, is the first and largest centre in the sultanate dedicated to recycling electronic waste and batteries.

The centre aims to protect the environment and promote a circular economy by ensuring the safe and responsible disposal of electrical and electronic devices. It also focuses on recycling and managing various types of electronic waste while reducing their negative environmental impact, in line with international protocols for data and environmental protection, in coordination with public and private sector entities.

Council members also discussed key challenges facing the centre and the importance of strengthening public awareness campaigns on the responsible disposal of electronic waste, as well as supporting the centre’s operations.

The meeting further reviewed the outcomes of the council’s main committees. Members were briefed on the results of discussions held by the Social Affairs Committee with relevant authorities, and examined recommendations from a joint meeting between the Development and Governorate Planning Committee and the Health and Environmental Affairs Committee.

The discussions also covered villages nominated by the Directorate-General of Heritage and Tourism to participate in the UN Tourism Best Tourism Villages initiative, which aims to promote rural development through tourism while preserving cultural and natural heritage.
