Yanqul – The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has completed construction of a flood protection wall in the Al Buwayridah area of Yanqul, while work continues on another protection wall in the Al Bilad–Al Madam area, which has reached 30% completion. The projects form part of the ministry’s ongoing efforts to reduce flood risks and safeguard agricultural land.

Both projects are being implemented through community partnership initiatives. Local residents contributed around 80% of the total cost, while the ministry covered the remaining 20%, reflecting strong cooperation aimed at protecting agricultural holdings from soil erosion and the impacts of wadi flows.

According to the ministry, the flood protection wall in Al Buwayridah is 150m long and 3m high. Construction has been completed in accordance with approved engineering standards.

Work on the protection wall in the Al Bilad–Al Madam area is progressing steadily. The structure will extend 1,700m in length and reach a height of 3m once completed, with implementation continuing in line with the approved schedule.

Salem bin Suhail Al Alawi, Director of the Agricultural Wealth and Water Resources Department in Yanqul, said the projects highlight the level of cooperation between the ministry and the local community in preserving agricultural resources.

He noted that the concrete protection walls help reduce the impact of wadi flows, particularly in light of climate-related challenges that have increased the risk of sudden floods.

Al Alawi added that the department provides continuous technical and engineering supervision during all phases of implementation to ensure compliance with approved specifications and the highest quality standards.

Through such initiatives, the ministry aims to strengthen agricultural stability in areas located near wadi channels, minimise potential financial losses and support farmers in sustaining their agricultural activities, thereby contributing to enhancing food security in Oman.
