Muscat – The Ministry of Health (MoH) has issued a comprehensive guide regarding the responsible use of weight-loss medications, categorising them as essential medical tools for individuals managing obesity or significant weight gain. These pharmaceutical interventions function through three primary mechanisms: reducing appetite, increasing the sensation of fullness, and decreasing the absorption of dietary fats. To ensure these treatments are both safe and effective, the Ministry emphasises a structured three-step approach that prioritises professional medical oversight.
The initial phase requires a formal consultation with a specialist to discuss the patient’s comprehensive medical history and establish a tailored treatment plan. Following this, patients must integrate the medication into a broader lifestyle framework that includes regular blood sugar monitoring, the maintenance of a balanced diet, and consistent physical activity. The final stage of the protocol focuses on safety and compliance, mandating that patients adhere to professional storage instructions, refrain from sharing medication with others, and consult a doctor immediately should any side effects occur. The Ministry concludes with a stern warning that these medications must never be used without direct medical supervision, as only a qualified physician can determine the appropriate treatment for an individual’s specific health needs.
