28 Jan 2026 CPA reiterates strict ban on counterfeit goods By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Muscat – Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) has issued a firm reminder to the public and commercial sectors regarding the legal prohibitions surrounding the trade of illicit items in local markets. Under the strict provisions of Article (7) of the Consumer Protection Law, the trading of any goods deemed to be adulterated, defective, or counterfeit is absolutely prohibited within the Sultanate.

This legal framework not only bans the physical sale and distribution of such items but also extends to their advertisement, ensuring a comprehensive crackdown on fraudulent commercial activities. The authority emphasised that these measures are vital for maintaining market integrity and ensuring the safety of consumers, as counterfeit products often lack the necessary quality controls and safety standards required by law. Executive regulations remain the primary tool for defining the specific criteria that categorise goods as counterfeit or defective, providing a clear legal basis for enforcement and prosecution.
