Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – A volcano in Ethiopia, identified as Hayli Gubbi, has erupted, spewing a massive column of volcanic ash that has created a cloud extending over parts of the Southwest Arabian Peninsula.

The eruption, which occurred on November 24, 2025, comes after a period of thousands of years of dormancy, as no previous activity has been recorded for the Hayli Gubbi volcano. This indicates a significant geological event following a prolonged period of quiescence.

Hayli Gubbi is situated approximately 15 kilometres southeast of the well known and continuously active Erta Ale volcano.

Satellite data has been crucial in monitoring the event due to the remote and inaccessible nature of the area, which is far from population centres. This data confirmed the release of a large quantity of sulfur dioxide gas accompanying the eruption.

Details on the event remain limited, reflecting the general scarcity of historical records and geological studies for the Danakil region, a harsh and rugged environment considered one of the most uninhabitable places on Earth.
