Muscat – Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology will sign an agreement with Airbus on Sunday to design, manufacture and launch Oman’s first communications satellite. The ceremony will be attended by H E Saeed bin Hamood al Mawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, along with other ministers, senior officials and representatives of security agencies.

The project marks a major step in enhancing the sultanate’s telecommunications infrastructure. The satellite is expected to expand national communications capacity, improve digital services and support greater technology self-reliance. Officials said it will provide wider and more reliable coverage for telecommunications and Internet services, particularly in remote and desert areas where conventional networks remain limited.

The satellite will support key economic sectors, including transport, logistics, emergency response and cybersecurity. It will also play a role in development of emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things and advanced smart communications.

The initiative aligns with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040, which places innovation and advanced technology at the centre of efforts to build a diversified, knowledge-based economy.
