New York, USA – The Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani was elected Mayor of New York City on Tuesday, becoming the city’s first Muslim and South Asian to hold the office.

Mamdani, 34, achieved a historic victory for the Democratic party’s progressive wing by defeating Independent candidate and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.

Mr. Cuomo congratulated the Mayor-elect, noting at a rally that “tonight was their night,” and pledging, “we will all help any way we can.” Mamdani is scheduled to deliver remarks in Brooklyn.

Additionally, Mamdani has pledged to order the New York Police Department (NYPD) to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he enter the city, citing the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant over war crimes in Gaza.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) hailed the victory as a “historic turning point” for Muslim Americans, marking a “historic rebuke of both Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism in politics.
