Muscat – The Ministry of Health has urged the public to strengthen preventive measures as seasonal influenza and respiratory infections continue to rise across the country since early October.

Speaking to a local radio station, Dr Faryal al Lawati, Senior Consultant in Infectious Diseases and Head of the Infectious Diseases Unit at the Royal Hospital, said current data indicates a stronger flu season this year, particularly during the winter months and ongoing school term.

She noted that while cases are increasing, the situation remains under control and there is no need for restrictive measures such as school closures or workplace suspensions.

The ministry reiterated that vaccination remains the most effective protection against influenza. It advised wearing masks when experiencing symptoms, practising good hand hygiene and avoiding close contact with vulnerable groups.

Dr Faryal said influenza activity in Oman usually peaks twice a year – from October to December, and again between March and May – before declining from June. Weekly sampling at health centres continues to monitor virus circulation and detect any changes.

She added that schools are a key environment for transmission, particularly among young children, making seasonal vaccination important for wider community protection. Health institutions are stepping up surveillance and awareness campaigns to limit the spread.

During winter, individuals may recover from one virus only to be infected soon after with another, sometimes more severe. The circulation of multiple respiratory viruses can result in repeated infections.

To avoid complications, Dr Faryal recommended consuming warm food and drinks and maintaining hand hygiene. “Vaccinations for those with recurrent infections can be particularly helpful. If symptoms worsen or persist, medical consultation is essential,” she said.

High-risk groups – including healthcare workers, pregnant women, the elderly and people with chronic diseases – are encouraged to receive the seasonal flu vaccine as early as possible.
