Suhar – North Batinah Municipality has announced registration for winter camp permits across the governorate, while inviting enthusiasts to enjoy the region’s cooler months in the desert.
Applications can be submitted through the official website bng.gov.om, with registration divided into two phases. The first phase, from October 22 to 23, was reserved for existing camp owners who wish to renew their permits. The second phase, running from October 23 to 26, is open to new applicants, with campsite allocation determined randomly according to the area.
Applicants must complete payment within 20 minutes of booking to confirm their reservation, failing which it will be automatically cancelled. The municipality noted that submitting an application does not guarantee approval and that it reserves the right to revoke any licence.
Camps will remain licensed till April 30, 2026. A licence fee of 200bz/sqm will apply, along with a refundable security deposit of RO200. Fixed structures are not allowed, and campsites must only be used for camping purposes.
Camp organisers are required to restore the site to its original condition once the permit expires. Failure to comply will incur a fine of RO50 per day. Each campsite must also include a temporary underground fibre sewage tank built to approved technical and health standards. The tank must be properly maintained throughout the camping period and removed afterwards.
Applicants must also obtain approved signage from engineering consulting offices and relevant regional authorities. Only Omani nationals are eligible to apply. For sites designated for games, carts and cafés, applicants must visit the municipality office in their respective wilayat.
The concept of winter camps draws inspiration from traditional bedouin dwellings once used by travellers and desert residents. Combining simplicity with the natural beauty of the desert landscape, these camps are often set up in areas with golden sand dunes and open vistas, offering a serene getaway during Oman’s mild winter months.
The camps are designed to provide families and tourists a unique outdoor experience. Typically, each camp includes sleeping tents, resting and food preparation areas, and traditional seating arrangements, alongside space for games and recreation, creating a wholesome atmosphere for visitors of all ages.
Beyond leisure, winter camps contribute significantly to domestic tourism and local economic activity, helping to boost services and trade across the wilayats of North Batinah.
