Morning rush in Amerat highlights unaddressed traffic congestion

Muscat – Each school morning in the wilayat of Amerat begins with long queues of cars and frustrated drivers, as chronic traffic congestion continues to disrupt daily life for residents.

The return to school has once again highlighted a long-standing problem that many say has been left unresolved for years. Parents describe the morning commute as a test of patience, with long waits, lost time, and no lasting solutions in sight.

“We leave home early to avoid the rush, but we face the same gridlock every day,” said Najib al Balushi, the father of a 12th-grade student. “This problem is no longer seasonal. We need practical solutions – bridges, additional lanes, or any step that could ease movement. Our children spend more time on the road than in classrooms.”

Residents say Amerat’s infrastructure has not kept pace with its rapid urban growth. “The wilayat has five main roundabouts, all under pressure, and none have signal systems that could help ease the flow,” said Abdallah al Balushi. “Traffic lights were tested two years ago, but never activated because they didn’t achieve the desired results.”

Parents also warn of broader consequences beyond frustration and delays. “Repeated tardiness affects students’ morale and academic performance,” said Badr al Siyabi. “Many parents also struggle to reach work on time. The issue is well known, but we only hear promises of studies and assessments, not solutions.”

Every new school term revives the same pattern: heavy congestion, public appeals on media and social platforms, and official assurances that the matter is being reviewed, added Balushi. “By the end of the school year, traffic pressure temporarily eases, only to return once classes resume.”
