Muscat – The holy month of Ramadan 1447 AH is expected to begin on Thursday, February 19, 2026 based on astronomical calculations, according to Dr Ishaq Yahya al Shuaili, Chairman of Oman Astronomical and Space Society.
Shuaili told Muscat Daily that while the beginning of Ramadan in Oman is officially confirmed by the moon-sighting committee, astronomical calculations offer an early indication of the likely date.
He explained that the conjunction of the moon and the sun will occur at 4:02:23pm on Tuesday, February 17, 2026 (local time). “On that day, it will be impossible to sight the crescent in any of Oman’s governorates or in most Arab and Islamic countries, as the crescent will set with the sun,” he said.

Shuaili added that on Wednesday, February 18 the crescent will be visible in most parts of Oman as well as in several Arab and Islamic nations, appearing about 13° above the western horizon after sunset.
“Based on these observations, Thursday, February 19, 2026 is expected to mark the first day of Ramadan in Oman,” he said.
Oman’s Main Committee for Sighting the Crescent Moon plays a crucial role each year in determining the official start of Ramadan. Comprising religious scholars, astronomers and government officials, the committee carefully examines reports from field teams across the wilayats and verifies sightings in accordance with Islamic principles.
Its decision marks the beginning of fasting for Muslims in the sultanate and ensures harmony in religious observance across the country.
