Muscat – Central Bank of Oman (CBO) has issued two commemorative coins in gold and silver to mark the 280th anniversary of the Al Busaid dynasty (1744–2024). The milestone highlights the sultanate’s enduring political stability under the Al Busaid leadership and its role in shaping Oman’s modern renaissance.
The coins feature designs symbolising Oman’s national identity. The obverse bears a coloured image of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, along with His Majesty the Sultan’s tughra, Al Alam Palace, and the Jalali and Mirani Forts. The reverse displays colourful depictions of Sohar Fort, a traditional Omani dhow, and the names of the imams and sultans of the Al Busaid dynasty.
Fifteen gold coins and 1,000 silver coins have been minted, each of RO1 face value. The gold coin is of 0.927 purity, while the silver coin of 0.999. Both measure 75mm in diameter and weigh 113.4g. The minimum selling price is RO7,935 for the gold coin and RO134 for the silver, subject to international gold and silver prices.
The commemorative coins are legal tender at their face value and available for purchase from CBO branches in Ruwi, Salalah and Suhar, as well as through Oman Post’s sales outlet at Opera Galleria from October 12.
