Muscat – The University Medical City has marked a significant medical milestone with the successful completion of a complex pediatric surgery, reaffirming its role as a national reference centre for specialised healthcare in Oman.
A joint medical team from Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH) and the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), led by Dr. Ghalia bint Khalid al-Maawali, Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery and Consultant Pediatric Surgeon at SQUH, performed a delicate operation on a two-month-old infant diagnosed with biliary atresia.
The procedure, known as the Kasai procedure for biliary atresia, was conducted using advanced endoscopic techniques-one of the most challenging interventions in pediatric surgery. Post-surgery follow-ups revealed marked improvement in the infant’s liver function and a decline in bilirubin levels.
This early intervention plays a vital role in reducing complications related to chronic liver fibrosis and minimising the likelihood of future liver transplants. The achievement reflects the expertise of Omani medical professionals and their adherence to global standards in surgical care.
The success further cements the University Medical City’s commitment to innovation, excellence, and advancing Oman’s healthcare sector as part of its strategic vision to deliver world-class medical services.
