Muscat – Oman Air Sports Committee will host a paragliding event on October 10 featuring 85 paragliders from teams affiliated to it.
The cross-country challenge is part of the committee’s strategy to develop local talent, raise the competitive level of Omani paragliders, and promote a culture of safety and discipline.
Dr Ahmed bin Zahir al Alawi, Chairman of Oman Air Sports Committee, said the event reflects the committee’s vision to enhance paragliding skills and raise awareness of advanced air navigation.
“Cross-country paragliding is a sophisticated sport that blends skill, planning and the spirit of adventure,” Alawi said. “Pilots compete to cover long distances using natural air currents and modern navigation tools.”
The Dhabab–Qalhat route was chosen for its technical suitability, tourism appeal and logistical advantages, making it one of Oman’s best for aerial competitions.
“The route offers diverse terrain – from mountains and wadis to coastal stretches – and enjoys favourable weather conditions most of the year,” Alawi explained. “Its proximity to essential services and facilities enhances both safety and organisation.”
Highlighting the cultural and tourism aspects of the event, Alawi noted that Qalhat, a Unesco World Heritage Site, provides a fitting backdrop to promote tourism and showcase Oman’s natural beauty.
The committee aims to use the event to encourage adventure sports, strengthen team spirit, and help paragliders improve their navigation skills and endurance levels.
Alawi reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to expanding air sports activities across Oman through partnerships with public and private institutions.
“Our goal is to make air sports a recognised pillar of adventure tourism in Oman and to highlight the country’s stunning landscapes to the world.”
