Lack of safe house leaves Kenyan maids exposed

Muscat – Members of the Kenyan community in Oman have called for urgent measures to support stranded domestic workers who lack a safe shelter in Muscat.

Kenyan domestic workers who fall into disputes with employers are often left without protection. With no safe house provided by the Kenyan embassy, some have been seen sleeping outdoors under trees or in wadis near the embassy in Muscat. They are forced to rely on the generosity of passers-by for food, water and other basic necessities.

Despite their contribution to Kenya’s economy through remittances, many workers find themselves in vulnerable situations. Social workers say the absence of institutional support adds to the trauma of being displaced and separated from families.

“It is heartbreaking to see these women sleeping outside without even the most basic support,” said Mbarak Ahmed al Araimi, a Muscat-based social worker and assistant treasurer of the Kenyan community in Oman. “They came here with the hope of earning for their families, but without protection they are left to suffer in silence. We need both governments to step in and provide proper shelters and mechanisms for their safety.”

Araimi added that as the number of Kenyan workers in Oman continues to grow, urgent measures are needed to ensure their safety and dignity. “The embassy, local authorities and humanitarian groups must collaborate to establish proper shelters and support systems. Until such measures are in place, many of these workers remain stranded, facing nights on the streets,” he said.

When contacted, the Kenyan embassy in Muscat said it is working on a solution to the issue.
