Suhar – Environment Authority (EA) launched an initiative called ‘Environmentally Friendly Bag’ at Oasis Mall in Suhar last week in cooperation with the awareness team of Consumer Protection Authority (CPA).
The campaign is part of the third phase of the nationwide ban on single-use plastic shopping bags. It aims to raise awareness among consumers and the community on the importance of complying with the decision, reducing reliance on plastics, and protecting public health and the environment.
It also seeks to highlight the risks posed by plastic waste and promote the use of sustainable alternatives such as cloth and biodegradable bags. The campaign supports national efforts to implement Oman’s environmental strategy and transition towards a green and sustainable economy.
The third phase of the ban, which came into force on July 1, 2025 broadens restrictions to include new segments of the retail and food sector. Outlets selling fruits and vegetables, groceries, packaged foods, sweets, bakery items, gifts, bread, pastries and confectionery are now required to stop providing single-use plastic bags and adopt reusable or paper-based alternatives.
EA has urged both businesses and consumers to cooperate in reducing plastic waste and protecting the environment for future generations.

These efforts align with Oman Vision 2040 goals of curbing pollution and promoting sustainable consumption.
In January 2024, Decision No 8/2024 outlined a phased approach to eliminate single-use plastic shopping bags by 2027, giving businesses and consumers time to adapt.
The first phase, which began on July 1, 2024 targeted pharmacies, hospitals and clinics. The second phase, implemented on January 1, 2025 extended the ban to textiles and fabric stores, clothing outlets, eyewear shops, tailors, mobile phone retailers and repair centres, watch shops, furniture outlets and household goods suppliers.
Violation of the ban is punishable with fines ranging from RO50 to RO1,000. Repeat offences within a month lead to doubled penalties.
