US Embassy Muscat launches culinary diplomacy initiative

28 Sep 2025 US Embassy Muscat launches culinary diplomacy initiative

Muscat – The US Embassy in Muscat hosted a launch event for My Food Story, a US Department of Agriculture-sponsored cookbook that celebrates culinary diplomacy to underscore the importance of hospitality and tourism in job creation and youth training.

The launch event featured students from National Hospitality Institute (NHI) who prepared dishes blending recipes from the My Food Story cookbook with Omani flavours. The initiative showcased how culinary exchange strengthens cultural understanding while equipping young Omanis with practical skills for careers in a growing industry.  The event also emphasised the fact that both Oman and the US are culinary crossroads, whose cuisines have been influenced by generations of cultural and geographic influence.

“Food tells our stories and builds bridges. My Food Story celebrates the richness of both American and Omani cuisine while showing how vocational training empowers youth to succeed in hospitality and tourism,” said H E Ana Escrogima, US Ambassador to Oman.

Salma al Hashmi, Vice-President of Marketing at Al Mouj Muscat and a contributor to the cookbook, said, “Food is universal. It tells our stories, links our traditions and shows how creativity emerges through cuisine. Most importantly, it reminds us that by sharing food, we also share friendship, culture and connection.”

Chef Haroun al Balushi of NHI added: “For our students, this event was a chance to showcase their skills and passion. The hospitality sector offers meaningful jobs and a pathway to growth for young Omanis, and culinary exchange makes that training even richer.”

The event affirmed the role of cultural diplomacy in strengthening US-Oman cooperation, particularly in vocational training and hospitality.
