Oman’s cinema dreams of global recognition

28 Sep 2025 Oman’s cinema dreams of global recognition By OUR CORRESPONDENT

In recent months, several film festivals – including the Singapore Film Festival and European Film Festival – were held in Oman to promote cultural exchange and encourage appreciation of cinema. But what should Oman do for its film industry to gain international recognition? Here’s what Muscat Daily readers said –

Muna Basheer al Zadjali, Private sector employee

For Oman’s cinema to achieve international recognition, it needs investment, skilled training and global partnerships. By empowering young filmmakers, showcasing authentic Omani culture and hosting international festivals, Oman can place itself on the world’s cinematic stage.

Amal al Harthy, Student

Oman has talent but lacks global visibility. We need platforms to showcase our films beyond local screenings. Partnerships with international film festivals, subtitling in major languages and creating funding opportunities for youth will help. If Omani cinema tells authentic stories rooted in our traditions, the world will be eager to watch.

Bader al Rawahi, Aspiring filmmaker

What Oman really needs is infrastructure – professional studios, distribution networks and training centres. The recent festivals brought world cinema here, but we must send our stories out. Once we have technical expertise, quality productions and government-backed initiatives, Oman can stand proudly on the global cinematic map.

Aeysha al Balushi, Homemaker

We need to create a culture of cinema at home. Currently, most people only watch commercial blockbusters. International recognition comes when we nurture audiences that appreciate artistic films. Schools, universities and cultural clubs should promote film appreciation; only then will Omani filmmakers feel encouraged to experiment and innovate.

Khalid al Hinai, Businessman

Oman should invest in films as both an art and an industry. Incentives for co-productions with international filmmakers could bring technical know-how here. Imagine a Hollywood or Bollywood film shot in Oman – it would showcase our landscapes and talent. With the right policy support, Oman can become a hub for cultural exchange. The Oman Film Society can also hold regular workshops.

Aruna Menon, Homemaker

I think Oman should encourage film education through masterclasses and residencies with visiting filmmakers. Festivals bring exposure, but training and mentoring bridge the gap. If young Omanis get hands-on learning from global experts, they’ll create films that not only reflect their culture but also meet international standards.

Rakesh Verma, Private sector employee

Oman has rich heritage and stories yet to be told. To be recognised internationally, the country must invest in script development and global marketing. Films don’t travel without the right promotion. If Oman builds strong festival circuits, collaborates with regional markets and invests in global distribution, recognition will surely follow.
