London, UK – An unprecedented maritime expedition tracing Oman’s entire 3,165km coastline was launched in London, UK last week, signalling a new stage in the sultanate’s ocean conservation efforts and seafaring heritage.
The Oman 3165 Expedition, unveiled at the Royal Geographical Society in London to coincide with World Maritime Day, will unfold in two phases: November–December 2025 and January–February 2026.
Led by explorer Mark Evans in a Greenland-style solo kayak, the journey will be entirely human- and nature-powered, using only paddling, currents and waves, and conducted under strict sustainability standards with no carbon emissions.
Officials said the expedition will act as a living narrative of Oman’s centuries-old relationship with the sea. It will showcase the biodiversity of the country’s marine and coastal ecosystems, highlight the work of young Omanis and coastal communities, and produce educational content for schools worldwide.

Through podcasts, research and artistic collaborations, it aims to turn Oman’s coastline into an open laboratory and amplify its role in global conversations on climate change and ocean stewardship.
The launch event, held under the patronage of H E Badr Mohammed Badr al Mantheri, Oman’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, gathered International Maritime Organization member state representatives, scientists and educational institutions.
Asyad Shipping, part of Asyad Group, is sponsoring the expedition. The company said the initiative reflects its commitment to sustainable shipping and supports Oman’s bid for International Maritime Organization membership.
Capt Khalil al Hooti, Vice-President of Marine at Asyad Shipping, said, “The Oman 3165 Expedition embodies the meeting point of Omani seafaring heritage and environmental responsibility. By supporting this initiative, Asyad Shipping underscores its commitment to placing sustainability at the heart of its operations while enhancing Oman’s profile on the international maritime stage.”
Over recent years Asyad Shipping has modernised its fleet of more than 80 vessels to meet advanced environmental standards, introduced smart fuel systems and cut emissions through digital monitoring, aligning with Oman’s 2050 net-zero goal.
